Transported thoughts... (From FAERIES by Brian Froud and Alan Lee- Pan Books - 1978) |
A wedding will take place tomorrow. Not surprisingly,
I’m not included on the guest list but my thoughts will be wending their way to
the veritable castle that will act as backdrop to this age-old fairy tale
set-up.
Spying... (From FAERIES...) |
Part of me would like to be a voyeuristic fly on the wall, but I shall
just content myself by playing the time-honoured role of the uninvited witch, in
my head. However, the wish I would make for the couple in question is actually
being realized – that they should live together forever after.
Third time lucky, after all...
The Three Witches... Ex-wives PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE .(FAERIES...) |
Whenever I hear the below record, Fire and Rain by James
Taylor, I just feel its beauty and no longer take it as a litany to “see me
through another day”. People may change so much that you never see them again;
they are beyond recognition, out of reach and have simply gone – out of your
life but also away from all that had seemed to make up theirs.
Worse still, the
change is so radical that you don’t even want to acknowledge or see the person
they have become, and in their eyes you are just a dead weight from the past. Then
the one 'left behind' finally has to change in turn, passing through all the
related emotional states and getting bogged down and stuck fast in certain ones!
You oughta know.... However, this long drawn-out baptism of fire leads you onward towards
the things that really do count in
the present so it must be beneficial ultimately. You learn.
Just yesterday
morning they let me know you were gone,
Susanne the plans they made put an end to you.
I walked out this morning and I wrote down this song,
I just can't remember who to send it to.
I've seen fire and I've seen rain,
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end.
I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend,
But I always thought that I'd see you again.
Won't you look down upon me, Jesus,
You've got to help me make a stand.
You've just got to see me through another day.
My body's aching and my time is at hand,
And I won't make it any other way.
Oh, I've seen fire and I've seen rain,
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end.
I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend,
But I always thought that I'd see you again.
Been walking my mind to an easy time my back turned towards the sun,
Lord knows when the cold wind blows it'll turn your head around.
Well, there's hours of time on the telephone line to talk about things to come,
Sweet dreams and flying machines in pieces on the ground.
Oh, I've seen fire and I've seen rain,
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end.
I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend,
But I always thought that I'd see you, baby, one more time again, now.
Thought I'd see you one more time again,
There's just a few things coming my way this time around, now.
Thought I'd see you, thought I'd see you fire and rain, now.
Susanne the plans they made put an end to you.

As for fairy-tales endings; no one remains spellbound for
eternity.
And now I shall return my inner witch to its rightful place....

Brian Froud is one of my absolute favourite artists.
ReplyDeleteHis work is beautiful, isn't it, even the most gruesome pieces! I think there was another book, and I know there were many imitations, but his art is fantastic. I had my book as a birthday present in 1980!
ReplyDeleteI've got quite a few of his books and a set of what are basically tarot cards but called The Faery Oracle. I discovered him after the film 'Labyrinth'.
ReplyDeleteYour sad story about people changing reminds me of some lyrics by Fiona Apple "only kisses on the cheek from now on and in a little while we'll only have to wave".
ReplyDeleteHopefully by losing one person who's changed we'll gain others who fit in with how we are now.
I love Brian Froud, I've got the faerie book and the runes of elfland
Hello Miss Simmonds and Melanie! I was going to ask you if Bryan Froud and Jim Henson knew of each other, but obviously yes. I don't know why I'd never made the connection before. Got a book out of the library today by Froud - though not sure what the original title was (it's in French).
ReplyDeleteHello, I just stumbled across your blog when I was blog hopping! I wanted to say thank you for this post. It was so insightful and thought provoking, we sometimes need reminders of who we are. :) Will visit again Ruth
